About Gharb, Gozo
At the centre of Gozo's western tip, and connected to Rabat (Victoria) by bus #91, Gharb is the most traditional and the sleepiest town in the Maltese islands,
and has seen relatively little new development. The Baroque parish Church of the Visitation in the central square, built between 1699 and 1729, has one of the most attractive
exteriors in Gozo.
During your wanderings in Gharb, keep an eye out for "houses of character", the local term for the immaculate, painstakingly restored luxury dwellings, usually
owned by Maltese businesspeople and well-off foreigners. Gharb holds the island's highest concentration of these imposing dwellings, dripping in rustic charm and boasting
expansive vernacular gardens, swimming pools and rooms that smack of an interior designer's touch. Houses of character are highly prized by Malta's elite, a phenomenon
that has turned Gharb into a town of a few hundred locals and many more absentee residents.
